This painting was the result of an exercise that I found in Artists Magazine, Jan/Feb 2016 issue which was an article written by artist Carol Hillock. She developed the exercise as a way to help us “ditch the details” by staging a six step process beginning with blocking in the major shapes seen
in the reference photo, and then using single colors to paint the blocks on the canvas. Â Then she suggested stepping back and then focusing on various parts of the painting to add color and various marks. Â I liked her concept of “one stroke wonders” which meant that you could had a single stroke to add punch to the painting.
