This was painted in an online course with Will Kemp entitled Venice–Light & the Landscape Impressionistic Course.  It was an indepth course that took me about 4 weeks to complete.

The course was amazing, but a little more advanced than any I had taken before.  I’ve taken other courses with Will Kemp, but this by far pushed me more, and resulted in much learning about color mixing, lights and darks, shadows, scale, and the use of a ground of pale umber (mixed with burnt umber and titanium white).

The full scale drawing of Venice Landscape was introduced only after preparing 4 or 5 canvas boards (8 inches by 10 inches) which were used to paint exercises .

The full size painting was developed in eight lessons, each about 30 minutes.  Here is a progression of paintings, starting with a drawing which was done using the grid system from the reference photograph provided in the course of a Venice landscape.

Following the reference photograph is my progression through the course culminating in the final painting.
