Acrylic on Board, 4 inches by 7 inches.

This painting was done in 2 hours in an exercise on Will Kemp’s blog.  Using a limited palette, we started with painting on a pale umber ground onto the surface of the board.  I drew the main shapes of the reference photo onto the board, and then used a brown acrylic marker to go over the initial drawing shapes to make a more impressive underpainting.

Through a series of about 5 steps, we put on layers of paint starting with the brown table cloth, and then moving to the cup, saucer and spoon, going back and forth to build up the colors and layers of impressionistic painting.  This was most enjoyable, especially since it was completed in under two hours.
