Acrylic on canvas, 18 x 24 inches.  The painting is based on the original by Johannes Vermeer, the Dutch painter (1632 – 1675).   Using a room in his home in Deft, Vermeer painted a number of paintings set in this room.  The Geographer is one of these.  There will others of his that I am working on.

The Geographer, painted by Vermeer in 1667-68, is one of only three signed paintings.  I did this painting because I studied geography in undergraduate school, and nearly pursued it has a field of study.  I chose a career in geology and science education, instead.

Nevertheless, the painting by Vermeer is one that shows a scientist at work and in intense study and inquiry.
